Chicago has a system of pole mounted sensors and systems that can very accurately detect and locate a gun shot and relay the data to dispatchers faster than anyone can call 911. Obviously, there are not enough of these gizmos to change Chicago's well deserved reputation as the murder capital of the world, but where they are deployed the crime rate has gone down considerably. I'm not sure if the devices actually reduce crime or simply chase it off to an area that is not monitored. The sensors are not hidden at all...in fact they are very well marked and purposely conspicuous. I go to Chicago fairly often and will get a picture next time.
